WebFeb 2, 2010 · Of the original Flamsteed catalog’s 2935 stars, 91 were missing from the Bright Star Catalogue. In Mr. Wagman’s list he identifies Lyncis 44 as HR3870. From my inverstigation, HR3870 is variable star CS Ursa Majoris, which is considerably north (8°) of the star illustrated in figure 1 of Herschel’s remarks. A Flamsteed designation is a combination of a number and constellation name that uniquely identifies most naked eye stars in the modern constellations visible from southern England. They are named for John Flamsteed who first used them while compiling his Historia Coelestis Britannica.
