You really only need to worry about top dead center if you had the dist pulled out, other wise if you mark the balancer, connect to #1 and pull the advance wire, you should be good to go. With electronic spark control, it has to be set "dead nuts" with a timing light. You're lucky, in a way. Later model "R" engines with CMFI, don't even have timing marks.
