SpletWe identified the following research themes that are of particular relevance: (1) eutrophication and climate change as key drivers of limnetic communities; (2) increasing homogenisation of limnetic communities across large spatial scales; and (3) the dynamics and effects of invasive species as traced in lake sediment archives. SpletLakes o Photic zone = surface layer where light penetrates o Aphotic zone = deeper, darker water o Littoral zone = shallow water near shore where light reaches bottom o Limnetic zone = Water beyond the littoral zone that supports plankton communities o Profundic zone = Dark zone below limnetic zone where photosynthesis is impossible and is ...
SpletThe limnetic zone is the top layer of lake water away from shore. This zone covers much of the lake’s surface, but it is only as deep as sunlight can penetrate. This is a maximum of 200 meters. If the water is muddy or cloudy, sunlight cannot penetrate as deeply. SpletField observations and trapping data indicate that limnetic males nest on open substrate whereas benthic males nest on substrate in vegetation. Given these habitat differences, we conducted laboratory experiments to determine the effect of conspecific rival nesting males on the courtship behaviour of the two species.
